Project Day: Studio Curtain

A busy week. We had some special visitors from a national magazine. We cannot reveal anything yet, but we will soon. V Exciting.
So we had to make a special curtain for the occasion!
Using the patchwork method we sewed a whole heap of our fabric (in pre-cut squares) together.
Then some floral opened edged lace trim from an op shop in Mullumbimby came in handy for the top encasement for the curtain rod. Easy peasy.
After a few hems & pressing it was done.

Project Day: New Cupboard Lining

Next week we have some very exciting visitors coming to Beach Vintage so things that have needed doing are getting done around the place. Including the front doors of the kitchen pantry. Some of you may recall the previous covers were patchworks of vintage wallpaper samples. After 2 years they were looking a little worn out.

Yesterday was time to jazz them up a little with some oilcloth. I used this design. Simply cut roughly to size, smear some white craft glue quite generously all over the front panel of the doors and smooth down with an oven glove. Leave to dry for a few hours and trim with a ruler and stanley knife. ( No they are not my hands but, alas, my husband is now even involved poor bugger).

I also completed something similar in the bathroom a few years back and it's still looking great.

Oh No the dreaded detox

I am not sure about you but we had the most wonderful indulgent christmas full of food, fun, family, friends and lots of bubbles. Now the new year is here oh dear and I guess its time to detox, last night in my house we had a very healthy boring and miserable dinner of chicken salad yet we were both dreaming of pasta and beautiful fresh hot bread loaded with butter. Its a dreary day here and the rain is bucketing down today so I am really dreaming of pasta now, hope its not dreary where you are! Don't forget our mega weekend store sale ends tomorrow! Christmas Leftovers

I know Christmas is all over but here are some leftovers from my Santa Stocking.
I topped my new retro cookbook off with a fresh Frangipani from my garden this morning. It is in a mini vintage glass vase. One of my favorite things ever. I love mini floral settings.
Hopefully together, they will give out some inspiration for lot's of 2012 cooking adventures!

New Year is always a time I feel like crawling away and hiding. Everyone is talking about what they want to do and change about themselves in 2012. I almost fell for the trap myself whilst reading Oprah Magazine over the Christmas break! I always find it easier to just "feel" what I want the year to bring into my life. Not actually pinpointing certain things.

Here's a last peek at Beach Vintage for 2011. Lot's happening. Right this very moment the kids are swimming out front. Howard the dog is finding a cool spot to hide. My fridge is full of food. The Christmas tree is shining. Can you see my beloved vintage measuring ducks? Yes, one was dropped last night and the head snapped. No problems, we fixed her with sticky tape.
Jody is off to Straddie and we are off on an adventure to yet another beach.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas.

The first weekend in December went flying by and Christmas is definately coming! I am getting very excited and unusually festive. The Christmas tree went up and I am hosting Christmas lunch this year for the first time in many years and am very much looking forward to having my gorgeous family and friends with us. We just adore our toile fabrics couldn't resist creating this tablescape for lunch last weekend at Jody's house. Because the fabric is so wide it is perfect for most tables and creates a lovely overhang around the sides. We used about 3 m of this blue toile fabric and hemmed the edges. This style of print never goes out of style.

Advice for Monday

Over the weekend it became apparent that "this" time of year has crept up and bit us once again. People seem to be walking a little faster. Kids are excited as they finish their last few days of school. The days are getting warmer and lasting longer. All this can sometimes lead us to feel a little tense. Short term remedy? Cut some blooms and light a candle. Doesn't take long. Looks fabulous. Feels lovely. Here is the result!

Project Day: Inspiration Oilcloth

Do you know what oilcloth is? Many people don't. We get emails all the time asking what is this stuff ? So here is a brief description and some ideas we have sourced from from inspirational people.
What is oilcloth? Basically oilcloth is a vinyl that is supported with a woven cotton mesh underneath it. The pattern is on the top. It is made up of 91% PVC 6% polyester and 3% cotton. Oilcloth will not fray! Make a tablecloth in minutes using decorative scissors like pinking shears.
Sewing with oilcloth? use a denim needle or a size 16 if you have one. Best to sew on the cotton (underneath) side if you can. There are so many things you can make with this fabric. I have included some examples here today. Anything from kids bibs and aprons to lunch bags and recovering chairs.

Our house is moving along and becoming a home it currently looks like a wreck as you will see but I have also put some pictures to show you what it may hopefully look similar to when finished! Project Day: Modern Christmas Napkins

Dear Mum,
This year we are not going to use tacky Santa Claus napkins from the two dollar store!
Here's what we have made from some lovely heavy weighted cotton fabric for the Christmas table setting.
All we did was make a template 46cm x 46cm and cut out the napkins. A simple over locked and then hemmed edge and we are done.
So mum, this year you can concentrate on the things that we love about you. Like making roast chicken!

Project Day: Change as Good as a Holiday

Every now again....actually every more so often. Maybe just all the time!
Yes, new cushions for the sofa are always in order.
With all these new fabrics we have been busy creating new cushions.
It's easy to change the look around your place.
Here's what you can see.

Use a colourful sheet and tuck it all around the base seat (this yellow striped one was found at a charity shop for a few dollars).
Pink and White fabric found here and we used some old rectangle inserts.
Black and White Zig Zag fabric found here.
Turquoise Lattice fabric found here.

Rules we go by?
Always mismatch colours around the place and most important......have fun!

Colourful Week Ahead

To go outside and pick your own produce. Now that's lucky. Look at these tomatoes. Picked from the Beach Vintage Garden over the weekend. Oh, and that's a new dress too. The colours go well together don't you think?

Project Day : $7.50 Chairs Recovered

Picked up these chairs from Ebay recently. $15 the pair. And although the style was perfect, the fabric on the seats was not. Having a mix of kids and dogs around the table frequently it was time to recover them in something more "practical".
Here's what happened:

Seats were removed by unscrewing joins underneath.
Oilcloth was the decided fabric choice for the recover. Yes, just wipe it down with a damp cloth when the spaghetti sauce falls down on it.
Seat bases were laid down on top of the fabric and 2 pieces were cut. Leaving enough room around all the edges for the recover.
Using a staple gun pull the sides up and staple securely all around. Use good tension.
Re attach the seat bases.

The laminated oilcloth used was French Eden in Pink
This pattern also comes in Blue and Red.

Here's whats happened so far.

Made it to Hamilton Island. Here is Jody unpacking our luggage

ie: champagne. I made one friend on the balcony which then turned into loads of friends. The girls decided it may be nice to get a jet boat out to Whitehaven Beach today. Seriously have I died and gone to heaven? This is amazing. Life is amazing. Whilst typing this now in my hotel room, the girls are banging on the door. Time for a late lunch. Poolside. Gotta run.

Is it selfish to claim a whole month as your own? And to name it after yourself? I got this idea from a friend last year and I have been planning it ever since. You see she turned 40 and took a month off and claimed it as "the month of herself". Now it's my 40th Birthday and I am doing the same. I am so excited. I have a few weeks booked in a beach house in Northern NSW and then off to Hamilton Island with my girlfriends. Blogposts over the next month will be images from "The Month of Simone". Living on the water, we always get lot's of interesting things washing up on the shoreline. Unfortunately we see a lot of rubbish, but also some beautiful things too. Well maybe beauty is in the eye of the beholder but this is what the tide bought in over the weekend and I love it.

Project Day: Spring Frilly

La ee dah. Just because it's spring. I decided to cut up a vintage tea towel (eekk) and make this gorgeous cushion cover. So simple peoples. No zips or buttons (you know me). It's called a pillow cushion cover. The insert just slips in the back. This is what you do:

Firstly decide what size pillow you want ( I used a 45cm square insert)
Cut the main/front piece of fabric 2.5cm bigger than the pillow form ( so 55cm square)
Cut the 2nd/back piece of fabric ( I choose black polka dot fabric ) 15cm longer than the first.
Cut this long piece in half
Press edges on these pieces and hem
Measure your trim (optional) to cover the entire outside of the cover.
Attach trim with a long stitch to hold in place
Place all the pretty bits ( right sides of fabric together) together and sew.

Can't Hold Back

I know its still 12 hours away but I cant hold back any longer. Got up at 6am. Stripped my sofa covers off and replaced with new fabric covers. Mixed up my cushions. Grabbed some gerbera's from the garden. Why? My absolute favourite season is about to begin. I am so excited I cant contain it! Today I have been running around taking photo's at home. Here are some images from around my place today.

Project Fabric Day: Tablescape

We have been playing with an old outdoor setting that has been sitting on the verandah for a few years. What better way to decorate it than raid our fabrics. We used Alexander Henry's Hollywood Pink heavyweight fabric for the tablecloth and for the cushion covers Heather Bailey's lightweight Nicey Jane. All of the fabrics featured are 100% cotton.

Over the weekend I was sent an email by someone who I have not seen for many many years. An old school friend. I basically grew up with her and we had a ball together throughout our teenage years. She emailed to tell me she had come across some old photo's of us as kids. OMG. This is a Madonna Party we attended in 1986. Can you tell which one is me? Project Day: Studio Floor Finished

Remember the studio floor? OK, here is a first look at the space. Finished! The main feature was the stencil flooring. I hand painted some stencil shapes to try and create an illusion there was a rug on the floor. The stencil cost about $20 and I used some left over paint. It took awhile but worth it.

I didn't use lines or a guide, just my eye and the square edge of the stencil (line it up each time). I painted them across the floor until I thought it looked right. Some of them are a little wonky, but that's how I like things anyway.
I hung the hanky bunting up this morning. Can you see it? So sweet.
Anyone can do this. It doesn't cost much to change the look of a space.

Yum. I have a weakness for chocolate hearts. Actually, I have a weakness for anything chocolate. Can I tell you a secret.....I had a few bites. No-one was looking.
Visiting a chocolate shop is always hard, but even harder when you have a 5 year old and you are on a diet! I took these pictures last weekend on a visit to Stanthorpe. There is a little chocolate shop called "Heavenly Chocolate" near Ballandean and they have all sorts of things made from chocolate. Take a visit if you are ever around the area. Just don't blame me!

Not Fake

I know these look fake, but they aren't. Amazing but true these are real roses and they are shining today in my home. They were a last minute impulse buy as I wizzed through the local supermarket. Marked down to $5 a bunch I couldn't resist them. I was in one of those moods this morning and decided to put them in a vintage tin filled with water.

Project Day: Vampin up Storage Shelving

You know those storage units you can buy from the hardware store. With the ugly steel frames? Well the thing is we needed to buy some for the studio but we had to try and make them more appealing to the eye. Is that possible? Well, here's what we did:

Unpack the units and separate all the outer frames.
Grab some different coloured spray cans - we used pale pink, blue, green and yellow.
In an opened aired area spray straight onto the steel and cover all sides on all frames.
After the paint has dried assemble the units.

If you really want a mismatched look you could even put the units together with 4 different colours each end.

What are friends for? Well they are for many things. But my absolute favourite is when they bring me home grown flowers from their own backyard. Wrapped in some good old fashioned foil. All scrunched up at the base. You know. And for no reason at all. Here are some hibiscus a friend dropped by. I put them in an old glass jar and sat them on my vintage table. Perfect xxx

Don't Chuck It - Hang It

My daughter has grown out of this sweet pink tu tu dress, so I cut the bottom off, placed it on a vintage clothes hanger and hung it on her bedroom wall. Of course I added a pom pom made from tissue, left over from a party I had not long ago. I just adore the colours and couldn't bare to throw it out. Sweet.

This Wednesday we are doing a new window at the shop with a great colour theme. I am trying to decide what kind of fabric to cover these lampshades in. Here are the bases, which I bought at the beginning of the year. I want them to make a real statement when they are finished and be the feature of the window display. I am feeling a little crazy today so god only knows how they will end up! I will show you the result on Friday.

Project Day: $5 Shoes Not Enough

I bought these new shoes on sale a few days ago for $5. But you know me. It didn't end there. I had visions of a transformation. A mismatched colourful one. There was no turning back!

Craft Glue
2 x store bought crochet flowers
2 x fabric covered buttons
Polka dot bias tape

I attached my buttons to the middle of my flowers with craft glue. Then I added the bias tape all around the edges of the shoe using the same glue [ start at the back of the shoe where the seam of the shoe is ]. Attach my decorated flower on top with glue and leave to dry for a few hours.
I am thinking of lovely things to do this weekend.

Monday's Melting Moment

Great weekend? Thanks for your overwhelming response to my last post. Hugs. Over the weekend I strolled around a country market. I love a good market. I came home with lot's of yummy fresh fruit and veg. All from local farmers and the like. Of course, I couldn't resist these melting moments. Every now and then I spoil myself with one. Served on vintage china makes them look that extra special. Here's cheers to a great week.

Project Day : Project Simone

Last year someone took a photograph of me that changed my life [see first photo on this post]. You see after I saw that photo I realised I needed to make a change. Prior to this my life consisted of mostly unhealthy eating [and drinking] habits. And it was starting to show. My goal was to lose 7 kgs. So I joined a gym in January and changed the way I treated my body. No drastic diets or fads, just plain simple healthy foods and moderate exercise. The next photo was taken this morning. 7 months after the first. I have lost 5 kgs and feel so much better. I also chopped my all my hair off. It was weighing me down! I am not far off my goal now.
Make the changes today that you want to see tomorrow.

One Good Thing

Confession. Not a great lover of Winter. Spring and Summer are my friends. But of course I try to remain positive and think of all the good things Winter brings us. I am sure there are many and maybe you could let me know what they are? Meantime, this is one good reason for me. My coriander grows like wild fire! Here is a bunch I picked from my garden yesterday.

Project Day: Floral Basket Pillow

At first I thought this was a piece of vintage fabric. That was until I unwrapped it! After picking up this up for a few dollars at an op shop I couldn't resist making my very own floral basket pillow for my outdoor chair. A tiny bit kitschy I know. But nevertheless I fell for it!
Firstly I cut out my fabric in the basket shapes.

With right sides together sew all the way around leaving a gap at the base to stuff filling.
Turn pillow right side out & push all the edges out.
Stuff with some pillow/cushion stuffing. I always use an old pillow that has lost it's mojo. I always keep stuffing to recycle.
Sew the bottom edge closed with the machine [you could insert a zip if you want].
I added a pink bow using some left over bias binding tape. You could use anything.

After I finished I realised you could make a template of your own and sew a similar shaped cushion using any kind of floral material. For a novice you could even patchwork a piece to represent the basket at the base.

Back Home & In Love

Hi everyone. I am back.......from possibly the best holiday I have ever had. A big statement I know. But well deserved. Can you imagine your perfect holiday? Maybe you have already had it, maybe it is still coming. It's that holiday when you feel so alive and happy, and that feeling doesn't stop, the entire time.

Mission Accomplished

What a week! Thank you for all your welcoming comments. I am very happy to say we have settled into our cute little Queenslander and love being back in the big smoke. I have jammed in as many things as possible, all the things I have missed. I rode my bike, caught the ferry to the gym, went to dinner and enjoyed a great new Italian restaurant in Bulimba. The photo is the aftermath of my yummy seafood broth. I sat in the park and had coffee with my gorgeous nephews, bought some lovely food and will have my family for dinner and a few vinos tonight. But most importantly of course the molly dog is settled and happy in her new home but yes I must admit we all miss the beach.....

Hi everyone Simone has appointed me as the mystery guest blogger while she is away. Well I must say I am honoured and a little bit daunted as I have no idea what to say or do however I will post a little about myself & my life as its a little crazy right now [will give you an update in a few days]. My name is Jody Marsden I am featured in the picture with Simone doing flood relief. I am married and have a lovely dog named molly I have a business and a passion for cooking for friends and family. I love nice food, clothes, furniture and wine and most of all, I love the beach. This week I have moved from living at North Straddy back to the city to the suburb of Bulimba, I am currently interviewing for two new staff and also building a beautiful new house in Hawthorne. Life is hectic. I am crossing my fingers by Friday I will have properly moved, met with the builder employed two new people and will be eating nice food and drinking wine here's hoping x

Project Day: Vintage Inspired Hanky Bunting

More and more fabrics are arriving in store at Bulimba. They have been ever so popular. This week I wanted to make a pretty little display bunting to hang in our fabric section. This one I made from vintage inspired hankies and bias tape.

Decide on the length of your bunting and that's how much bias tape you will need.
Fold your hanky's in half diagonally and press with iron.
Open up the bias tape and sew your first hanky in [ leave a little bias at the start and end so you can tie/hang your bunting ].
Mix and match the other hanky's and sew them in leaving approx 1-2 inches in between each one.
Hang somewhere for instant pretty!

Well don't be deceived by these photographs. They were the only ones taken before driving rain and extreme bad weather took over. My weekend in Sawtell started off great but Mother Nature took over. We got out in time and I have heard the Pacific Highway is closed today because of flooding so thank goodness we left when we did. Nevertheless, here are some pics I took of my car at the event BEFORE the rain started. Mine is the first one in the line up on the hill. Still had fun though. Lot's of laughs and red wine!

Project Day: Cockatoo Lamps

Here are some lamps I recovered this week for a customer. She wanted black base lamps which are not really my taste but I must admit the result is beautiful and I am very happy with it. Recovering lamp shades is not that difficult as long as the shade is white and the cylindrical type.

Lay your fabric out and use the shade as a tracing pattern.
Using a light HB pencil, lightly trace lines both sides of the fabric as you turn the shade around end to end.
Cut out your piece.
Using spray adhesive, give both the wrong side of the fabric and the lamp shade a good dose of glue.
Let the glue sit for a minute.
Carefully attach the fabric to your shade.
Fold the end over to meet neatly.
Choose some trim and add with a hot glue gun.

After months of waiting Ellie has taken her maiden voyage today. She was officially registered at 9:30am this morning and then it was straight off to the shop for a photo shoot for Australian Home Beautiful magazine. Phew. It's all done. I am so glad to finally have her on the road. She drives like a dream and I love her! Wish I could take you all for a spin.

Project Day: Studio Stool

Every studio needs a stool or two! I found this white one on ebay for $20 and decided to recover the top with some oilcloth. Oilcloth is so fabulous. Easy to work with, doesn't fray and just wipe it clean.

For this project I used Classic Florals in Pink .

place your oilcloth on a flat surface face down.
put your stool on top of the fabric and roughly cut around the edge making a circle from your oilcloth. Make sure you leave about an inch or so all around so you can fold the fabric over.
fold the fabric under the seat and secure in place with staples.
repeat all around and secure with staples as you go.

This is such a simple makeover and it only took a few minutes.

I get instant connections with certain creative people. Something about their work draws me in and holds me there. This week I have fallen for Heather Bailey. She is a fabric designer [among other things]. Can you imagine creating beautiful fabrics like these all day long.............meanwhile reality has set in today. I need a coffee, have been up all night with thunderstorms and a terrified 5 year old! Happy Monday!

Project Day: Studio Sofa Revamp

As you know, I am giving my studio a makeover. This week I decided to recover my old lounge sofa that I got from the refuse centre for $20 last year. It has been sitting up there for ages doing nothing! I just covered over the top of the original cushions with some mismatched floral fabrics. Easy side stitching and rope ties. I have some leftovers of these fabrics: buy here

Project Day : New Window Display

Please don't scream but yes we painted this old Singer sewing machine white for our new window display. I wanted to do a window displaying our beautiful fabrics and notions we have for sale. My genius sister had an old Singer machine that was way past it's used by date so she got on the job and smothered it in white paint. What a fabulous job she did. And here is what the window looks like. Sorry for all the reflections in the photo.

Yep, this is me, aged 5. My first school photo. I dug it up last week and sat down with it for awhile. I had not seen it nor remembered it for many many years. It is funny how you remember yourself when you look at childhood photo's. All I can remember is lots of laughing, singing, make believe and dressing up! And my mum used to make me wear rags in my hair to bed at night so I would wake up looking like this! OMG.

Project Day: Cake Wrapper Candles

Tried in vane last Friday to post this but alas blogger was AWOL. So here it is on a Monday - which has never happened before! Happy Monday.

My friend is down and out. I am spending the weekend with her and I thought I would make some special candles that we could light at night and drink some wine by. Hopefully cheer her up a bit.

Grab some cake skirts/wrappers.
Buy some round cheap candles [mine from Ikea bargain bin for $2]
Place the cake skirt around the candle and secure in place.
Light the candle and place them all around [ please never leave a candle burning unattended].

A nice touch. Would be great for parties too.
